Founded in 2001 by Jade Howe, Howe quickly gained recognition in the industry for its West Coast vibe and tailored aesthetic. Jade, a Southern California native, had a long history designing for major brands in the surfing and skateboarding industries. In 1999, he launched Hawaiian Island Creations, but nearing 30, he felt a resistance to creating youth-oriented products and wanted a label more suited to his own generation. Skateboarding legends Tony Hawk and Per Welinder shared Jade's vision, leading to the launch of Howe under Blitz Distribution. Originating in Huntington Beach, considered the mecca of Southern California style, and with skateboarding icon Tony Hawk among the founding members, Howe initially had a strong connection to board sports. However, it successfully transitioned away from strictly street style by focusing on premium jeans, leading to a major breakthrough. The brand experienced a decline after the premium denim boom subsided, but in 2007, Seattle Pacific Industries acquired Howe, with Jade remaining as creative director to guide the brand to its next phase. Its more refined, stylish, and masculine style garnered renewed attention, including being selected for a Stuff Magazine Style Icon Award. It experienced another surge in popularity, being stocked by renowned select shops like Union and Fred Segal, and high-end department stores in New York.
